LA FAVORITA
On our really first day in Alicante my husband Johan and I were walking through the city centre, on a house search in the different neigborhoods. Arriving at the Mercat Central we looked into Calle Poeta Quintana and said to eachother: “This is a nice street to live!” It was lunch time so we sat down at a restaurant with a red fence. This was La Favorita.
Carlos, a funny singing waiter was serving us and we saw a lot of vegetarian options. Johan ordered “Patatas de la abuelita veganas” (Grandma´s potatoes with mushrooms, 8,90 Euro) and as a main course the vega burger (from the best brand there is: Beyond Meat, 8,90 Euro) and I ordered “Pulpo con parmentier de patata y costar de pimentón dulce” (Octopus with mashed potatoes and a sweet paprika crust, 15,90 Euro) and from the Menu del Día “Plato de carrilleras en salsa Español” (the cheeks of the cow).

I often went back. I love their “Olleta Alicantina” which is a typical local dish from the region, a sweet winter soup with beans. But their deserts are great too. Johan loves their cheese cake and me their “Croqueta de chocolate”. La Favorita became our favorite place and after a few months Carlos called me a “cliente fijo” (regular client).

La Favorita started two years ago (on the 16th of April 2019). Owner Maria C. Álvarez Camara had signed the contract on the 3rd of April, her birthday. Before La Favorita, waiter Carlos and María had worked together in another restaurant for five years.
Maria C. Alvarez Camara is 35 years old, born in Alicante (1986). She is lesbian and has a relation with Coral since two years, who works as a waitress in the restaurant. Maria had her coming out at the age of 15 years old.
Coral Sempere, 33 years old and born in Elche (1988). She came out of the closet at 19 years old. Coral: “Luckily my mother and father are wonderful and the acceptance process was only with myself without obstacles from my environment”. Coral has been in a relationship with Maria, the owner of La Favorita, since two years.
Carlos Coloma Lloret, 30 years old, born in Alicante (1990). Carlos is straight and does not have a relationship.
Carlos: “I have been working in the LGTB+ environment for 5 years now and on many occasions they have thought that I was gay, but I was never offended. I have always enjoyed the respect and tolerance of the community”.
Audrey Bourne-Chastel is 29 years old and born in Chambery, France (1991). She is straight and since 1 year in a relationship.
Audrey: “I arrived in Alicante in 2014 for my study at Erasmus. I supposed to stay only 6 months, but I liked the city and its people so much that I decided to change my life and stay in Alicante. I love the open mind of the people here!”.
Maria Jose Blasco Botella, 56 years old and born in Alicante (1965). Maria Jose is straight and not in a relationship, “I am free to play” she says and continues: “The loves of my life are my two sons. One of them is gay”.
Ana Garcia is 33 years old and born in Alicante (1988). Ana is in a relationship and calls herself pansexual. Ana: “I fall in love with people’s minds”.
